What a Backsplash Is Actually For

Beyond looks, a backsplash exists to stop spills falling behind the cabinets and to give you a cleanable surface behind the sink and range. Called an upstand in British English, it is the cheapest functional upgrade in a kitchen and one of the highest-impact visual ones.

It is also the single most common standalone kitchen project we do, because it changes how a kitchen reads without touching cabinets, counters or plumbing.

Options and What They Cost

Backsplash pricing runs by square footage, material, and layout complexity. A backsplash covers far less area than a countertop does, which is why it is one of the few kitchen projects people comfortably do on its own. Tile is the most accessible route and a full-height stone slab is the premium one.

The Full-Height Slab Option

If you are replacing counters anyway, running the same material up the wall is worth pricing.

A full-height slab backsplash goes from the counter to the underside of the uppers, or all the way to the ceiling behind a range. It eliminates grout lines entirely, which means there is nothing to discolor, nothing to reseal, and nothing to scrub. It reads as one continuous surface, and it is where a great deal of high-end Orange County kitchen budget goes.

The materials that do this well:

• Engineered quartz. Roughly 93 percent stone aggregate to 7 percent polyester resin, the most stain-resistant common surface and never needs sealing.
• Granite. Second most stain resistant, resealed roughly every five to ten years with a modern oleophobic impregnator.
• Quartzite and marble. For a bookmatched feature wall, where two consecutive slabs mirror across the seam.
• Porcelain slab. Thin, large-format and heat-proof, which is why it works directly behind a range.

Layout Is Where Tile Jobs Are Won or Lost

Anyone can stick tile to a wall. The difference shows in three places.

Where the cuts land. A good layout puts the cut tiles at the ends of a run and the full tiles in the visible center, especially behind the range and above the sink. A careless layout leaves a sliver of tile right where you look every day.

The focal point. Behind the range is the wall everyone sees. The layout is centered on the range, not on the corner of the room, and every other line follows from that.

Where it terminates. A backsplash needs a clean edge where it meets an open wall or a window casing. Bullnose tile, a metal Schluter profile, or a mitered edge all work. What does not work is a raw cut edge with a bead of caulk.

Substrate and Prep

Tile is only as good as what it is stuck to. Behind a sink, cement board rather than drywall is the correct substrate, because that wall gets wet. Every wall gets checked for flatness before setting: a wall that is out of plane by a quarter inch across four feet will show as lippage between tiles no matter how carefully they are set.

Outlets and switch locations get planned into the layout, and cover plates end up flush with the finished tile rather than floating off it. On a full-height slab, the outlet cutouts happen at fabrication.

Grout, Sealing and Living With It

Grout color changes a tile backsplash more than most people expect. Matching grout to tile makes the field read as one surface. Contrasting grout emphasizes the pattern. Neither is wrong, and it is the cheapest decision on the job to get right and the most annoying to change later.

Epoxy grout costs more, resists staining, and does not need sealing. Cement grout is standard and should be sealed. On natural stone tile, both the stone and the grout need sealing, which is the maintenance trade-off you accept in exchange for the look.

A full-height slab in quartz needs nothing. That is a real part of its appeal.

4. Layout. Dry-laid and marked before any adhesive goes on the wall.
5. Setting. Tile set, spaced and leveled.
6. Cure.
7. Grout, clean and seal.
8. Edge profiles, outlet plates, silicone at the counter joint.

Most tile backsplashes take two to four days including cure time between setting and grouting. A full-height slab is a single install day after fabrication, but requires template and fabrication time first.
